Case Studies For February 2012

Warranty Dispute

Mr Mah* bought a brand new car with 2 extended warranties in December 2006. The terms and conditions of the warranties required him to send his car for servicing upon reaching a certain mileage. When Mr Mah sent in his car to repair his car brake, he was asked to pay for the brake actuator. The dealer workshop claimed that the warranty was considered void since he had missed one of the servicing sessions. Mr Mah disagreed and felt that the company should continue to honour the warranty.

Through CASE’s assistance, the company agreed to replace Mr Mah’s brake actuator at no cost.

Failure to Honour

Mdm Soon* went to a beauty centre in December 2011 to touch up her eyebrow embroidery and tattoo her eyelids. The staff told her that it would cost $30 and $100 respectively. However, when it was time to pay, she was charged $300. After much negotiation, they reduced it to $280. She paid reluctantly and came to CASE to ask for a $150 refund from the beauty centre.

Through CASE’s assistance, the beauty centre agreed to give Mdm Soon a refund.

Shoddy Work

Mdm Fang* engaged a contractor to do some renovations works at her house for $4290 in July 2011. Despite the numerous rectification done, the work was not completed to the satisfaction of Mdm Fang and she wanted a partial refund from the contractor for the works she found to be unsatisfactory.

The case was eventually resolved through mediation at CASE.
